Curriculum and Assessment

At Ruakituri School, our curriculum is grounded in The New Zealand Curriculum, ensuring all learning is culturally responsive, future-focused, and inclusive. We are committed to providing high-quality programmes tailored to each learner, promoting equity, inclusion, and meaningful progress for every child.

We place a strong emphasis on foundational skills in reading (pānui), writing (tuhituhi), and mathematics (pāngarau), with a minimum of one hour each day dedicated to literacy and numeracy learning. Our teaching is supported by modern, age-appropriate resources and informed by current research and best practice.

Our curriculum is shaped by our rural setting, providing rich and authentic learning opportunities that connect students to their environment, community, and culture. Through purposeful integration of local knowledge and experiences, we foster engagement and deepen learning.

We are supported by an experienced and collaborative teaching team who work together to ensure consistency, responsiveness, and shared accountability for student success. Our approach includes the use of effective teaching strategies and evidence-informed practices to support learner progress.

At Ruakituri School, our vision of “Success for All” underpins everything we do. Assessment is an important part of this, helping us understand each learner’s progress and support them to achieve their best.

Our Approach to Assessment

Assessment at Ruakituri School is ongoing, purposeful, and designed to support learning. Teachers gather a range of information to understand each student’s strengths, needs, and next steps. This allows us to tailor teaching programmes and ensure all learners are progressing and achieving success.

How We Assess Learning

Teachers use a variety of methods to build a clear picture of student learning, including:

  • Observations of learning and participation.
  • Conversations with students about their learning.
  • Classroom tasks and work samples.
  • Formal and informal assessment tools.

This information is used throughout the year to monitor progress, guide teaching, and provide timely support.

How Assessment Information is Used

Assessment helps us to:

  • Plan next learning steps and adapt teaching.
  • Track and celebrate progress over time.
  • Identify and support students who need additional help.
  • Share progress with whānau through reports and learning conversations.
  • Report to the Board of Trustees and Ministry of Education.
Consistency and Quality

Our teachers work together to ensure assessment is consistent and reliable. Through moderation, we share expectations and make sure we are making fair and accurate judgments about student progress and achievement.

Supporting Active Learners

Assessment is part of everyday learning in our single classroom. Students are supported to understand their learning and take an active role through:

  • Clear learning goals and success criteria.
  • Opportunities to reflect on and discuss their learning.
  • Feedback that helps them improve.
  • Self and peer assessment.

This approach helps build confident, capable learners who understand their progress and next steps.
