School History

Ruakituri School has a rich history that spans more than a century, beginning in 1919 when it first opened as Waikatea School in the heart of rural Hawke’s Bay. In those early days, 23 students learned and played together, laying the foundations for a strong and enduring community. By the 1960s, the school roll had grown to over 70 students, reflecting a thriving local population. In 1969, the school was renamed Ruakituri School, proudly taking on the name of the valley it serves.

Like many rural schools, changes in farming practices and population shifts saw the roll gradually decline. Since 2001, the school has operated as a multi-level classroom for students in Years 1 to 8, led by a teaching principal. Throughout these changes, the strength and spirit of the Ruakituri community have remained constant. Milestone celebrations marking 50, 75, and 100 years have brought generations together, filling the school with stories, laughter, and a shared sense of belonging.

A significant new chapter began in 2021 with the complete rebuild of the school. From 2022, students and staff have enjoyed learning in modern facilities, complemented by the development of a new playground. Today, Ruakituri School continues to honour its proud past while looking ahead with confidence, providing a supportive and connected learning environment for all.
